Competency-based interviewing
If you are attending an interview which includes a member of an organisations HR department, expect to encounter competency based interview questions!
Competency based interviews are basically structured interviews where the interviewer will be working from a set of pre-determined questions. It works on the basis that the past is a predictor of the future.
The interviewee can expect to be asked a number of questions to be focused on drawing on experience of past examples.
Typically, they’ll be phrased along the lines of “can you tell me about a time when you….?
HR will tell you these would be based around core competencies like:
- Communication skills
- Delivering Results
- Interpersonal Skills
- Use of Initiative
- Planning and Organising
- Analytical Thinking
- Strategic Thinking
- Building relationships
- Developing Others
- Team Work
The reality is that these questions are more likely to be focused around very predictable tasks you will be expected to undertake in the new role.
They are likely to be ones which impact job performance most significantly, and will often be industry and job role specific.
