We're amazing and inspirational

Reading that scientists had found water on the moon made me feel great about being human. We're amazing.

At some point, those scientists chose the fork in the road of their lives that decided what career path they'd take - and that decision meant they were part of the team who discovered water on the moon.

It is discoveries such as this that make me realise just how much potential is in each and every one of us.

Talking about careers and chocolate...

After talking about chocolate yesterday, I've been thinking about how much diet and exercise matter when you're job hunting.

It might sound crazy, but they both matter just as much as any other element of your job hunting plan.

If you don't eat the right foods and exercise enough, you'll feel lathargic, which will stunt your job hunting abilities.

Both diet and exercise are linked to self-esteem too. So you're less likely to go for that better job and do well in the interview if you're not eating right and exercising right.

So those people who are dubious about the links between sports coaching and career coaching, the link just got stronger; diet and exercise are important to both of us.

Falling off the wagon

I've had a bad start to the week. The Monday I had yesterday is not even worth thinking about.

But I got up early this morning ready to face the day and make sure yesterday was purely a one-off.

I think about bad days as the day I fell off the wagon. We all do it.

A bad day is like a bar of chocolate. Yes you ruined your diet that day, but that doesn't mean you should scoff chocolate the next day too.

It's okay to indulge in an unproductive day every once in a while - just as it is that bar of chocolate.

So you didn't get any job hunting done yesterday. Or you missed an application deadline for a job you really liked the sound of. It happens.

Just don't get into the mindset that bad days come in twos, because they don't. They're definitely isolated cases.

Today is the day you'll make a difference.

Time to relax

I don't know about you, but I'm planning to put my feet up this weekend after a busy week.

Every once in a while, it's important to take time out and recharge your batteries.

The mistake people often make is to only take time out after they've achieved something big. But you need to take regular time outs in order to keep your energy levels up and keep yourself focused on your end goal.

So take some time out this weekend - wherever you are in your career plan - and treat yourself for being committed to developing a better you.

Coaching you to a better career

E-mail Print PDF

I've just been asked what a career coach is. And I surprised the asker of the question by explaining I'm just like a sports coach, except that my end goal is a better career for whoever I'm coaching, not a physical goal in the back of the net.

Coaching is a method of teaching, training and advising somebody with the aim of them achieving their goal.

It really is as simple as that.

What's difficult is being good at it. There are lots of coaches out there, from PE teachers to head coach on a premiership football team. They all have a job to do and go about tackling it in different ways.

There isn't one set way to career coach - the approach depends a lot on the individual being coached and what their end goal is.
